Botswana –
Okovanga Delta
Measuring over 15,000 square kilometers, the Okavango Delta is one of Africa’s most unique wilderness areas, attracting thousands of wild animals that thrive in its lush, water-rich environment created by the annual flooding of the Okavango River. The water travels over 1,200 km from the annual summer rainfall in the Angolan Highlands, reaching the Delta by March, with flooding continuing for approximately four months. Evaporation occurs rapidly due to the flat Delta landscape, which has an average elevation of less than two meters. When the water levels drop, water remains in the major canals, attracting a high concentration of animals and resulting in spectacular wildlife sightings.
Boasting a wide range of accommodation options and an incredible diversity of wildlife, the Okavango Delta offers some of the best wildlife experiences in Africa. The best months to visit are during the dry season, from June to October, when the rains have ended, and the water is at its highest. Many camps offer water activities, providing incredible, up-close encounters with wildlife.
